Intro

Everyone loves Raymond yeah yeah we know already. This popular show has Debra the loud wife, Raymond the weird voice main character, Marie the intrusive mother of Ray, Frank the funny dad of Ray, & am I forgetting someone oh year Ray’s brother Robert the unhinged giant with a chip on his shoulder.

“Life’s a little more interesting when you embrace the chaos around you – just ask my family!” – Ray Barone

Every week in this show Robert has to face the facts of his life. You see Robert was what you call a child of misfortune the firstborn who got replaced by his younger brother in the hierarchy. Ray lives across the street from his parents while Robert lived with them for 30 plus years until one day he moved into his own place across town.

Body

At this point Robert has his chance to form his own identity but nothing really changes other than the fact he now pays rent. His awareness was extremely poor for someone who was a police officer. You would think he would read the room and make an adjustment. Now I understand this is a show based on Ray’s life so Robert would never change based on this.

But this is an example I’m using of our unwillingness to leave a bad situation. Robert spent the majority of his time competing with his little brother for the affection of his mother. Robert had a huge argument in a car with Ray over who would get the right to let their mother stay with them in the event she would need it.

Conclusion

We all have misfortunes as children but eventually we have to read the room. But I have to admit Robert is my favorite character. He truly makes the show move without him & frankly I wouldn’t watch the show. Remember how Frank impersonated Ray and Robert couldn’t stop laughing or the time Ray hurt his back and Robert made Ray laugh because he knew when Ray laughs his back hurts.

You have to love how many people he has. Robert is the key piece to the show, a preverbal glue figure that holds everything together. Robert Barone a true victim of his own lack of self awareness. But for future reference watch “Lucky Suit” “traffic school” and “Robert’s date” for some of his best performances. As always, stay positive and have a great day.
