The Trouble We Get Into Not Knowing Better.

Once again, we have our beloved boxer Gervontae Davis in the news for an alleged violence case. I want to say first, it’s innocent until proven guilty in the court of law. But can we all have a real moment! We’ve all gotten into trouble in our youth or currently; it always amazes me how people have selective compassion & understanding. It seems to me it all depends on if you like the person who’s being accused; remember, that’s not how the court system operates.

We have to understand that as a fighter, Tank already has an attack-first, ask-questions-later mindset. Tank has been boxing since he was an adolescent; he’s been trained to fight first before thinking about what’s next. Also, you have to factor in he was raised in Baltimore; I don’t know how many of you have been there, but picture Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” scene where he started dancing with other zombies. When you grow up in that environment, you usually come out a certain way.

Can we have a real moment? Why is it surprising when a fighter gets in trouble for fighting when that’s what they do to make a living? We also have to factor in Gervontae wasn’t raised with both his parents. Now, when you have a certain perspective and you make millions of dollars, it’s hard to check your ego sometimes. Really, there is nobody to mentor Tank on life and dealing with people in a relationship. I view this situation as a tragic cautionary tale.

But in life, we have to accept the bad & good; we have good people and bad people — it’s just a part of life. You will see so many people castigate this young man; if you notice these events keep occurring over and over, so that means the approach we take is wrong. Gervontae represents all of us in a way. I’ve heard good things he’s done for his community, but that doesn’t get highlighted.

He has property there, he invests in the community, & he also gives food away. But once again, we have to take the bad with the good. I try to have a little compassion because I’ve messed up before. I always wanted a little understanding which I rarely received; sometimes people grow out of their way, but sometimes they just get worse.
